Bachelor of Arts - Course Requirements

The general pattern of study for a BA has been focused on a sequence of units that forms a 'major' in a wider pattern of units that provide a broader knowledge of humanities and social sciences. The major/s in the Bachelor of Arts at Tabor Victoria can take many forms provided they meet the requirements outlined below.

The flexibility of the BA enables students to import (a) one major sequence or (b) two minor sequences from a tertiary institution in Australia accredited under Section 11 of the Tertiary Education Act of 1993. Students who intend to exercise this option should discuss their intentions with the BA course coordinator.

Course Requirements

  1. A total of 144 credit points must be gained for the Ordinary Degree. Credit point weightings are shown in parentheses in the Module Descriptions (See 6.1 Appendix 1).
  2. Normally, modules are taken in the following year level order: “1” then “2” then “3”.
  3. All units in the Bachelor’s degree are taken at Tabor Victoria's level 3 except where the Course Coordinator grants a student permission to take electives, for instance at another institution, in which case, these must be at least at an equivalent level.
  4. All Students are required to complete a minor sequence of 24 credit points in Christian Foundations.
  5. Students must include at least one Group A major sequence, comprising at least 48cp. This sequence must include at least 18 cp in year level “3” modules.
  6. A minor sequence is a sequence in any discipline, other than the discipline of a student’s major sequence/s, that includes 24 cp, at least 12 cp of which are in units at above year level “1”.
  7. In their course, students must not include more than 48 cp in year level “1” units and must include at least 18 cp in year level “3” units.
  8. Some unit combinations will not be permitted because of an overlap in content. This will be explained in the unit descriptions.
  9. Unit prerequisites and any other restrictions described in the unit descriptions should be noted in making unit selections.
  10. Where a student requires or wishes to incorporate a unit undertaken at an equivalent level of study into a major or minor sequence this can be approved by the Course Coordinator, provided that it does not compromise the course outcomes. “Equivalent level of study” means a degree level, first year unit may be replaced by a degree level, first year unit at least; similarly for second and third year units. No more than six (6) cp can be counted under this rule.
  11. Where for reasons of student learning a unit is required that does not exist within the current major or minor sequences a special elective may be developed and approved by the Course Coordinator, provided that it does not compromise the course outcomes. All study pathways must be approved by the Course Coordinator. No more than six (6) cp can be counted under this rule.
  12. Special electives will be identified by S as the type identifier (see section 3.9.1) and retention of the unit number from the unit which the special elective replaces. E.g. TH-N2354.06 Australian Church History becomes TH-S2354.06 Special History Elective (Canadian Church History).
  13. Students who are seeking registration as Counsellors are required to apply to the Counselling Course Coordinator for permission to complete PR324.312 Counselling Field Education as a part. These students are encouraged to complete the Counselling Practicum and Field Education Minor.
  14. Students who are seeking registration as Counsellors are required to complete a Psychology Minor.
