Youth

Description

Youth is multi-disciplinary field of study @ Tabor and is receiving growing interest from the wider community – not only from young people as they seek to navigate this challenging time, but also from those who wish to grow in their understanding and skill as youth workers, youth ministers or chaplains.

Youth Studies @ Tabor focuses on growing an in-depth understanding of the nature of youth and the multi-layered relationship between young people and the social context in which they live. This field of study draws on knowledge, insights and methods from the social sciences and humanities, community development, social welfare as well as theology and spirituality.

Youth Studies @ Tabor seeks to positively engage the complexity and challenge of the youth experience by being both a support to young people as they seek to navigate this difficult terrain, and by equipping those who would journey alongside them.

Tabor takes seriously the fact that young people and their whole-self formation matters. The specialist service of empowering youth requires specialist training. Through this field of study students will develop competence and confidence in working with young people around issues such as: sexual health, relationships, at-risk, anti-social and prosocial behaviours, as well as spirituality and faith.

Study Options

Year in the Son
Year in the Son is a transformative year of spiritual formation and life equipping specifically designed for young people (17-22) that can act as a stand-alone experience (Certificate IV in Youth Development) or be incorporated into the first year of a diploma or bachelor program.

Undergraduate Youth Studies

There is a great deal of flexibility available when undertaking Youth Studies @ Tabor. A Youth Studies sequence (Major, Minor or Parts) can be incorporated into a named Bachelor award (Bachelor of Arts (Youth Studies), a more flexible general Bachelor Award, and even into Bachelor studies in Theology, Ministry, Mission or Biblical studies

Bachelor of Arts (Youth Studies)
The named award is a focused program of study incorporating:

  • Compulsory Minor in Christian Foundations (4 units = 24 credit points)
  • Major in Youth Studies (8 units = 48 credit points)
  • Major in Counselling (8 units = 48 credit points)
  • Elective Minor or Parts (4 units = 16 credit points)

The Bachelor of Arts (Youth Studies) award develops skills in the area of youth work and counselling, while providing supervised youth working opportunities in the field.

Bachelor of Arts (General Studies)
Students can also study a major or minor sequence in Youth Studies under a more flexible Bachelor of Arts (General Studies). This optional allows students to combine Youth Studies with other areas of interest, such as major or minor sequences in Psychology, Art or Counselling. Students can also use this option to import a major or minor sequence from another Higher Education Institution, or from other Tabor awards, such as the Bachelor in Theology, Ministry, Mission or Biblical Studies.

Bachelor of Theology, Mission, Ministry or Biblical Studies
Students who are primarily interested in undertaking a degree in Christian Studies can also incorporate Youth Studies in to such an award.
